He Shall Not See

When Good Cometh

Being unable to see when good comes is the most pitiful predicament a mortal can be in. It is a malady that God guarantees will afflict those who trust in men rather than Him. We don*t normally take hold of what we cannot see.

Jeremiah17:5-6: Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. 6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

God is The Only Good One. No one else is as wonderfully good as He is.

Mark 10:18: And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

The goodness that men MUST see is the goodness of God Himself. Sadly the goodness that they must see is the goodness that they are unable to see. There is no goodness that compares with the goodness of God. Neither is there anything that compares with the good and perfect gifts that He alone gives.

James 1:17: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

The victims of this malady are many and varied. It includes pessimists. It includes those that get an occasional glimpse of good but don*t know where it comes from. They think it comes from somewhere other than God. They think it is a lucky coincidence. The malady includes optimists who see good where there is none and even where there is evil.

Isaiah 5:20: Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

The malady victimizes people who count on their own good works to get them to heaven. It includes those that count on a religious system to get them to heaven. It includes those that count on their own intelligence rather than God.

Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

The malady afflicts the proud.

Malachi 3:15: And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.

We don*t get to define God. He defines Himself. We don*t get to define good. He defines that too.

This business of trusting in men instead of God comes in many sizes and shapes. I have known pastors who counted on their own intelligence and oratory rather than the Bible and the Holy Spirit. I know people who won*t read their Bible.

Before I gave my heart to the Lord I was one of those who could not see His goodness. One of the most wonderful blessings of the Christian life is getting to know a little more each day of His goodness.

Psalms 34:8: O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
